A Chairde,

Great News
The founding committee of Coláiste Loch Gile, working since 2008, are delighted to announce that the Department of Education have sanctioned the opening of Aonad Loch Gile, an Irish language secondary education unit for boys and girls to open in the Mercy College Sligo in September 2017.

Enrolment Evening
Wednesday January 25th 6:00–9:00pm in the Mercy College is the date for the Aonad and the Mercy's own enrolment evening. Parents who have an interest in enrolling their children and those who have pre-enrolled are asked to attend that evening.
To ensure an offer of a place for you may pre-enrol by going to www.colaistelochgile.net click the Pre-enrol button, fill in the spaces and press 'Send'.

New Era
This is a new era for Irish language education in the North West, it will be the only Irish language option for parents whose children attend the five Gaelscoileanna in Sligo, Liatroim and South Dún na nGall. Pupils who did not attend a Gaelscoil will be very welcome to enrol and it is expected that the demand will be such that in the forthcoming years that an independent Gaelcholáiste will be established.

Thanks & Praise
The founding committee would like to formally thank all the public representatives who made representations on our behalf in previous years: Your support was vital and truly appreciated.

We also wish to praise the efforts of The Mercy College’s Principal, Colette O’Hagan, staff and Board of Management. From the first meeting they revealed a respect, an understanding and dedication to the concept of an Irish Language Unit. After witnessing the amount of preliminary work, dedication and ambition they have for this 'Aonad' we believe that a very bright future awaits all students who seize the opportunity to attend Mercy College's Aonad Loch Gile from next September, 2017.

A Chairde,

Staid Reatha do 2016

Mar is eol daoibh mhúch an Roinn Oideachais ár ndóchas lena a gcinneadh gan ceadú don aonad Gaeilge, Coláiste Loch Gile Oscailt, i Mí Mheán Fómhair 2016. Seo cé go raibh 28 dalta cláraithe againn, tacaíocht ó chomhairleoirí, Teachtaí Dála, Eorpach agus feachtas an-láidir inar éirigh linn athbhreithniú a fháil ar a gcinneadh. Léirigh a n-athbhreithniú nár chomhlíon an BOO ach ceann as ceithre choinníoll.

Critéir d’Aonad Gaeilge

1. Os cionn 24 dalta.

2. Costas cóiríochta neodrach.

3. Dóthain múinteoirí le Gaeilge.

4. 375 dalta sa máthairscoil.

Dea-nuacht do 2017

Ó shin i leith bhíomar i mbun cainteanna le h-éarlaimh eile i gceantar Shligigh atá iontach dóchasach Aonad a sholáthair le go n-osclódh sé i Meán Fómhair 2017. Fad is gur féidir linn os cionn 24 dalta a sholáthair táid breá muiníneach go mbeidh siad ábalta na coinníoll eile a chomhlíonadh. Freisin táid dáiríre faoi aghaidh ag tabhairt ar an scoil a oscailt leis an chéad agus an tarna bliain dóibh siúd nár éirigh leo tosú i mbliana.

Ról an Choiste

Sé’n post atá ag an choiste anois ná an líon cláraithe a choimeád agus a mhéadú don bhliain tosaigh agus na blianta amach romhainn. Chuige seo iarraim ar chuile tuismitheoir le suim sa ghaeloideachais a bpáistí a réamhrollú ag http://colaistelochgile.net/Claruchain.php

Bí páirteach sa Choiste

Iarrann muid ar thuistí le leanaí a bheadh ag tosú sna blianta amach anseo iad féin a chur ar fáil chun glacadh le dualgaisí an choiste. Dá mhéid fuinnimh a thugtar sea is mó cinnteacht go dtosóidh sé. Glaodh ormsa @ 086 8260860/ Micheál @ 087-9467700/ Carol @ 086-3820258/ Mairéad @ 087-4167025.

A Chairde,

State of play for Sept. 2016

As you may well know all our hopes were dashed by the Department of Education’s refusal to sanction the Aonad Gaeilge, Coláiste Loch Gile, to open in September 2016. This is despite having 28 children enrolled support from TDs, councillors and MEPs and a very strong campaign which did get them to review their decision. Their review revealed that the ETB’s application only satisfied one of the four main criteria.

Criteria for Aonad Gaeilge

1. Over 24 pupils.

2.Cost neutral building.

3. Enough teachers able to teach as Gaeilge.

4. 375 pupils in host-school.

Good News for 2017

We have since been in communication with other patrons in the Sligo area, who are extremely eager to provide an Aonad Gaeilge and have it opened in Sept 2017. So long as we can provide them with more than 24 pupils they are more than confident that they can fulfill the other requirments. They are also seriously considering opening with a 1st and 2nd year to ensure all those students who were let down this year will have a second chance.

Committees Roll

The committee’s job is to maintain and increase the enrollment figures for the starting years and future years. To this end we ask all parents who continue to be interested to pre-enroll you children on http://colaistelochgile.net/Claruchain.php

Get involved in the Committee

We aslo ask all parents with children starting in the coming years to make themselves available to take on committee duties. The more energy from parents the more certain it will happen

A Chairde,

1. Coláiste Loch Gile ag lorg máthair-scoil eile
De thúisce diúltú na Roinne Oideachais athbhreithniú a dhéanamh ar ár gcás agus iad ag fanacht docht daingean gur gá 375 dalta bheith sa mtharscoil chun Aonad a bhunú, tá'n coiste ag caint le soláthreoirí oideachais eile sa dúthaigh chun a n-ábaltacht aonad a sholáthair dúinn i mí Meán Fómhair 2016.

Tá an-suim á léiriú ag na solráitheoirí eile seo agus tá'n coiste an-dóchasach go n-éireoidh linn seo a bhaint amach.

2. Coiste ag lorg cruinniú leis an Roinn Oid.

Ag an am céanna tá’n coiste i dteagmhál leis an Roinn Oideachais i dtaca cruinniú práinne a eagrú maidir lenár gcás. Tá siad de shíor ag dár ndiúltú ach nílimid ag glacadh le seo.

Seans go mbeidh agóid le déanamh, breis ar ball…

3. Cearta oideachais i dTeanga Náisiúnta glactha i ndlíthe an AE

A bhuíochas le foireann Marian Harkin san Eorap A d’aimsigh rialaithe riachtanacha a leagan amach tosaíocht cearta an saoránaigh oideachais a fháil nó leanúint de bhieth ag fáil oideachais i dteanga oifigiúl na tíre sin (féach atá nascaithe).

Má leanann an Roinn de bheith ag diúltú cearta ár bpáistí oideachais a fháil I gcéad teanga oifigiúl na tire seo, tá baill den choiste sásta cás a ghlacadh i gcoinne na Roinne.

4. Cruinniú Gaelscoileanna leis an Roin Oid.

De thúisce ár gcás agus cás coistí eile ar nós sinne nó atá i gcás níos measa lorg Gaelscoileanna, an scátheagras náisiúnta, cruinniú leis an Roinn Oideachais chun cás na Gaelscoileanna, Gaelcholáistí and Aonaid sa tír a phlé.
D’fhreastal achan rannóg a bhaineann le bunú scoileanna ar an chruinniú seo agus dúradh gur tháinig na deacrachtaí ollmhóra atá ann de thúisce easpa treorlínte aontaithe i mbunú Aonaid chun solais orthu siúd ón Roinn a bhí i láthair.

5. Critéir breise i mbunú Aonad

Sa tuaraisc céanna ó 2004 ar úsáideadh chun sinn a dhiúltú, tá scríofa ann nach bhfuil ach “15 dalta de dhíth chun Aonad a bhunú” (4.2.1). Freisin aithníodh ins an cháipéis céanna ó 2004 nach raibh aon Mheánscoilíocht lán-Ghaeilge ar fáil i Liatroim ná Sligeach.

A Chairde,

1. Coláiste Loch Gile seek other host school
Due to the Department of Education’s refusal to review our application and their sticking to the requirement of 375 pupils in the host school in order to establish an Aonad the committee has commenced talks with other educational institutions in the region to asses their ability to provide us with an Aonad Gaeilge.

Much interest is being expressed by these other providers and we’re hopeful that we’ll have this provision established by September 2016.

2. Committee seek meeting with Dept. of Ed.
Concurrently the committee is in touch with the Department of Education regarding an urgent meeting to discuss our case. To date the Committee has been continually refused this. But we are not accepting their denials.

A picket might be due shortly, more anon…

3. Rights to Education in National Language established under EU Law

Thanks to Marian Harkin’s team in Europe who uncovered some vital rulings that set a precedence in EU Law that establishes the right for citizens to be educated or continue their education in their country’s official language (see attached).

If the Department continues to refuse our right to educate our children in our country’s first official language there are members of our committee who are willing to take a case against the Department.

4. Gaelscoileanna Meeting with Dept. of Ed.

Due to our case and other committees in similar or worse circumstances Gaelscoileanna, the umbrella body representing all Gaelscoileanna called a meeting to discuss the present state of affairs are regards Gaelscoileanna, Gaelcholáistí and Aonaid in the country.
The meeting was attended by all those who have an involvement in the establishemnet of schools and was said to have enlightened many in the department to the enormous difficulties faced due lack of accepted guidelines on the running and establishment of Aonaid.

5. More criteria in establishing Aonad revealed

In the commission report of 2004 that set out the criteria now being used to refuse us, it also set out that only “15 pupils were required to establish Aonad” (4.2.1).
The same report also states that Liatroim and Sligeach were yet without provision for Gaelic medium secondary education.

A Chara,

Fuair Coiste Bhunaithe Choláiste Loch Gile drochscéal ón Roinn Oideachais inné ag diúltú ár n-iarratas chun Aonad a bhunú i gColáiste Bhaile An Fhóid. Seo h-é an triú h-uair dóibh an choiste a dhiúltú.

Táimid iontach díomách leis an gcinneadh seo mar atá an BOO agus tuistí an 28 dalta ar cláraíodh do 2016.

Beidh cruinniú práinne ag an choiste bhunaithe agus na tuismitheoirí Dé Luan. Ní bheidimid ag glacadh le seo mar a bheadh sop sa ghaoth. Cuirfimid tús le feachtas chun cinntiú gur féidir linn freastal ar riachtanas Mheánscoilíocht tré Gaeilge sna Iar-thuaisceart i Meán Fomhair 2016.

Beidh bhur gcabhair uainn agus táimid dóchasach go mbeidh sé ar fáil chun tacú linn.

A Chara

The Coláiste Loch Gile founding committee received the terrible news from the Department of Education that they again refused our application to set up an Gaelic unit to Ballinode College.

We are extremely disappointed as is the ETB and the parents of the 28 pupils who enrolled to start in 2016.

The founding committee will hold an emergency meeting on Monday with the parents. We will not be taking this decision lightly. We will prepare our campaign in response to their decision in order to make certain that the necessity to provide secondary schooling through the medium of Irish in the Northwest is provided for starting in September 2016.

Your help will be required and we are hopeful that you will be available to support us.

Coláiste Loch Gile to be located on Clarion Road

The establishment of a new Irish language secondary in Sligo took a significant leap forward this week with the news that the Education and Training Board (ETB), previously the Vocational Educational Committee (VEC), has formally agreed to become the patron of Coláiste Loch Gile. Seosamh Mac Donncha, CEO of Mayo, Sligo & Leitrim Education and Training Board says “We are delighted and honoured to be asked to facilitate the establishment of Sligo’s new Irish language secondary school. Under MSLETB patronage, we have offered Coláiste Loch Gile the use of a green-field site behind the Institute of Technology on Clarion Road. We will begin immediate negotiations with the Department of Education and Science to seek permission for the establishment of the new school and subsequently, we will be working closely with Sligo County Council regarding planning.

Meanwhile Coláiste Loch Gile will hold its registration evening for September 2015 in the Clarion Hotel on Thursday 12 February at 8pm. Parents and pupils of 6th class will be most welcome to come along to find out more about the new school. Anna Ní Bhroin, Chairperson of Coláiste Loch Gile’s founding committee emphasises that Coláiste Loch Gile will cater not only for pupils of Gaelscoileanna primary schools who have received their education to date through Irish but will also welcome pupils from the region’s English language primary schools. “We are running an Irish language summer camp this coming July and this will be an ideal opportunity for pupils who enrol in the school to immerse themselves in Irish in preparation for the new school year. The school will also provide extra classes in Irish and in other subjects for the new students and will also offer Irish language classes for parents.”
